〈衣服〉という概念を景観に適用する
これは、2003年夏に新潟で開催された『第２回大地の芸術祭・越後妻有アートトリエンナーレ2003』に出品した作品です。工学院大学藤木研究室の学生たちと一緒に制作しました。越後妻有地方の中心地である十日町は、絹織物やきものにゆかりの深い町ですが、今では多くの織物工場が使われないまま空き家となっています。この芸術祭では、市街地に点在するそうした場所を舞台として国内外のアーチストが展示を行ったのですが、私たちに求められたのは、それら点状に分散した展示スペースのあいだをつなぐことによって、大きな回遊動線を作り出す役割を担って欲しいということでした。そのため、今回のプロジェクトでは、それらの要望にできるだけ答えるにはどうしたら良いか、何ができるかといったところから考え始めました。
The Expanded Concept of "Kimono"
This project was unfolded at the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial 2003 in Tokamachi-city of Niigata prefecture in Japan. The Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial is a natural-setting festival for nature, art and human beings, which takes place every three years in six municipalities of Echigo-Tsumari region.
Tokamachi-city, the center of Echigo-Tsumari has a long tradition of silk fabrics and kimonos. So we interpreted the concept of "kimono" not only as traditional Japanese clothes, but also applied it for more general "clothing" and tried to dress on various objects in town.
The first candidate which we immediately thought was the utility pole (telegraph, electric and telephone). Although they are little noticed, they are the eyesores in terms of townscape. We wished local residents to rediscover their own town by dressing various clothes. We might be able to improve the present townscape dramatically by making very minor changes. We planned dressing not only utility poles but street lights as well. In terms of dressing street lights, all street lights in one street extended over 300m were covered with "Unikko pattern" designed by Maija Isola.

そこで、十日町にゆかりの深い“きもの”に着目し、この“きもの”という言葉を、「和服」という意味だけでなくもう少し広い意味で「衣服」ととらえて、街の中のいろいろなモノに服を着せていってはどうかというアイデアが生まれました。
服を着せる候補として最初に思い付いたのは「電柱」でした。普段はあまり意識していないけれども景観的にはとても邪魔な電柱に、様々な衣服を着せることで、自分たちの街をもう一度新鮮な目で見直すきっかけになってくれればと考えました。
また、電柱だけでなく街灯にも服を着せました。この街灯に関しては、フィンランド・マリメッコ社から全面協力をいただき、ひとつの通りが長さ300mにわたって、マイヤ・イソラのデザインした “ウニッコ柄”で埋め尽くされたのです。
